Discover how Reading Plus increased reading fluency and proficiency in Hounslow secondary students

Reach Academy Hanworth Park were looking for a reading development programme which would support with fluency and improving reading comprehension in intervention groups for their Year 7 students.

After a successful implementation process with close support from Daisy Education, providers of Reading Plus, Hanworth Park are seeing great success with the programme.

Improved reading comprehension with Reading Plus

Before Reading Plus, a large proportion of our pupils were not working at the expected standard in their reading when they joined the school. Our baseline assessment revealed 19% were working 5+ years below a Year 7 level. 

In just seven months with Reading Plus, Hanworth students have made an average of:

  • 3 years’ comprehension gains in text proficiency.
  • 63 words per minute gains in fluency.

All pupils who regularly use Reading Plus have made progress with their reading - meaning they are more able to access the curriculum.

Many of our weaker readers have also grown in confidence since using the programme and are more resilient with reading longer texts.

Boost reading fluency

Reading Plus allows multiple pupils to practise their silent reading on a regular basis and be held accountable for it.

Reading Plus enables 30 of our weakest readers to practise their reading for at least 90 minutes per week outside of lesson time with some coming into school in the morning and others accessing the programme at home.

It would not be possible to achieve this using only one-to-one interventions due to capacity.

What I like most about the programme is that pupils have autonomy over what they are reading, which gives them a sense of control.

Our pupils love using Reading Plus - they enjoy having ownership over what they can read and are motivated by 'levelling-up'.

Utilising Reading Plus data for maximum impact

The in-built initial baseline test on the programme was integral in assessing our pupils' reading and giving us a better understanding of reading weaknesses across the year group. It meant we were better able to support individual pupils and the year group as a whole.

One of my favourite features about Reading Plus is the detailed ongoing assessment data as students progress within the programme, allowing me to see individuals’ reading speed, comprehension accuracy and vocabulary level.

This reporting data revealed that many of our pupils needed support with fluency, which was part of the reason we have such a focus on disciplinary literacy at our school where pupils read in most lessons.

We had lots of support from our Reading Development Consultant with the implementation process - meaning we could quickly set our pupils up with Reading Plus.
