Meet our Reading Plus Champion Nathaniel

Meet Nathaniel

We’re delighted to introduce one of our Reading Plus Champions, Year 6 pupil Nathaniel from St Fidelis Catholic Primary School.

Nathaniel’s teacher, Annabel Phelan, nominated him for the role and shared with us:

“Nathaniel is a fantastic role model when it comes to using Reading Plus. Since starting in September, he has read the most words in his class at 67,722. He has improved his reading speed by an average of 35 words per minute and has gained an average of 1.7 levels.”

The role of Champions

At Daisy Education, we are devoted to accelerating reading progress while instilling a love for reading in our students. One way in which we do this is by appointing Reading Plus Champions who have the opportunity to complete additional exciting tasks, including:

  • Reviewing new (and unseen!) texts to be added to Reading Plus.
  • Sharing their experience of Reading Plus in a blog titled ‘My Reading Plus Journey’.
  • Collaborating with us on interviews with children’s authors.

We’re thrilled to publish Nathaniel’s first blog as part of the role. Here he shares all about his passion for reading.

My name is Nathaniel Iremiran. I am a Reading Plus Champion. I am 11 years old and I like Lego. I have one brother and one sister, and I live with my mother and father.

I like to read non-fiction, funny and fiction stories. Out of all the books I have read, my favourite books are the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. My favourite character is Greg Heffley because of his sense of humour and his funny nature.

My favourite authors are:

  • Jeff Kinney (the author of Diary of a Wimpy Kid)
  • Julia Donaldson (the author of The Gruffalo)

I enjoy reading because I learn new words, like veto, zygotes and chromosomes.

I love to play sports such as tennis, football and swimming.

If I had a superpower, it would be being able to control time.

If I had a million pounds, I would buy every Lego set I want and give some to charity for the homeless, since a lot of people are now living on the street.

Encouraging reading for pleasure

Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success – more than their family circumstances, their parents’ educational background, or their income.

Daisy Education is dedicated to not only improving students’ reading skills but also developing a reading for pleasure culture in schools with Reading Plus, with a range of extra initiatives, including:
