While attainment data is useful in providing a broad picture of performance, it doesn’t always show how pupils are reading.
As texts become more complex across Key Stage 2, some pupils:
- Read accurately without a secure understanding.
- Struggle to maintain fluency and pace.
- Find it difficult to sustain attention across longer texts.
These gaps are often not immediately visible, but can limit progress across the wider curriculum.
We are offering a limited number of schools the opportunity to use the DreamBox Reading Plus diagnostic assessment for free: Get a clear baseline for improving reading outcomes and enable informed decisions around teaching and intervention.
What is the assessment?
Reading Plus is an online reading development programme that begins with the InSight Assessment.
Within just 40-minutes, you will get a clear, detailed overview into the key components of reading development:
- Fluency
- Comprehension
- Vocabulary
- Reading stamina and engagement
Rather than providing a single score, it helps you understand how each pupil is approaching reading, and where support is most needed.
The initial assessment gives us baseline data and makes it clear which pupils need to focus on fluency or comprehension. We found that pupils may have high fluency but low comprehension. The data is very clear. It can be downloaded and discussed during phase meetings. Leaders can hold other teachers to account. As a Year 6 teacher, it can be a challenge to listen to 1:1 sessions. Reading Plus makes it clear who I need to support and who I need to challenge.

Following the assessment, a Reading Development Consultant will:
- Review the outcomes with you.
- Help identify patterns across cohorts and groups.
- Support you in translating the findings into practical next steps.
