Zi's Reading Plus Champion tasks
We are thrilled to share what Zi has achieved as Reading Plus Champions this academic year!
Within her role, Zi has the opportunity to complete a series of exciting reading activities throughout the year, including:
- Writing a blog exploring love for reading and how Reading Plus has made an impact.
- Expanding their reading further and reviewing books outside of Reading Plus.
- Creating a vlog detailing all their favourite things about reading.
Publishing their very own piece of creative writing on our website.
Opportunities may also arise to collaborate with us on interviews with children’s/YA authors.
My reading journey blog
How do you feel about becoming a Reading Plus Champion?
I feel blessed and grateful to be a Reading Plus Champion. It makes my heart feel warm like fulfilling a passion.
What do you enjoy most about reading?
I enjoy how when I read a good book, it has plots, confusion, problems and unusual solutions.
Can you tell us about your favourite author/book?
I think my favourite author is Rachel Renée Russell because she makes wonderful novels.
Out of all the books you have ever read, who is your favourite character?
I think my favourite character is either Nikki (Dork Diaries) or Greg Heffley (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) because they have funny personalities and they both have enemies who hate them. I think the bullies add some depth and problems which makes it a bit relatable to people.
What are your favourite things about Reading Plus?
I like how there are Re-Reads which help people who cannot remember all the information and there are vocabulary words that encourage readers to add more descriptions.
Have you learned any interesting facts with Reading Plus?
I learnt various amazing facts like that different parts of the tongue can taste different things like salty, spicy, sweet; the boxer Clay- now known as Muhammad Ali beat Sonny Liston when almost nobody thought he would win; and the historical, factual story of the 'unsinkable' Titanic.
Do you feel your reading skills have improved with Reading Plus?
My reading skills definitely improved because I can read more fluently, am able to pronounce unfamiliar words and read more quickly.
Do you have any advice for other students on their Reading Plus journey?
I advise focusing on independent reading as well as the Guided Window because you could look at the context, while the Guided Window doesn't go back, so if you weren't concentrating, you wouldn't be able to read it again. The ReReads are nice but I recommend not using all of them because you probably didn't store the significant information for the questions upcoming.
Book review of 'Kicked Out' by A.M. Dassu

Hi! My name is Zi. The book I am reviewing is Kicked Out and it is fiction.
The author is A.M Dassu and it is aimed at children aged 10 - 14+.
The genre is contemporary realistic fiction and sports literature.
My favourite character is Aadam because he shows resilience even when he was accused of theft; kicked out of Mark's house; and being threatened to be deported back to Syria, where there is a current war.
The most dramatic part is when Callum gets arrested and protested against it because he got what he deserved and Mark's mum stopped being influenced by him.
Candyland by Zi
Eve and Lily were having fun. Watching a movie until it was midnight, they sprinted upstairs to their giant bedroom. But oh, how they wished they slept before the time of horrible monsters.
This terror-tyrant growled at the girls' glimmering eyes.
"What," Eve opens her eyes, "was that?"
Snatch!
In the blink of an eye, Lily was gone.
"Lily! LILY! Stop playing tricks on me." whispered Eve, who was as frightened as Lily.
Silence.
Snatch! Both of them were plunged into the mysterious sky.
Landing softly onto a fluffy cloud, they found each other. "I'm hungry Eve, I wonder if this is cotton candy?" She stuffed it into her mouth.
"IT IS!" Eve screeched, unable to maintain her excitement. They ate until the girls stopped suddenly, they had found some humongous footsteps.
Who had left these? Why is there cotton candy? Where are we? Are we at candy land or something? Eve pondered as many unanswered questions leapt into her mind. But no answers. Abandoned questions.
"Wow! Let's follow it!" Lily jumped and pulled Eve to trace who made this. Running after the trail, the girls eventually came to a bridge with a river of orange juice underneath.
"Look!" Lily exclaimed as she gulped down some of the juice. She was thirsty. Eve ignored it as she didn't like it. Walking ven further, they got to the end of the world and there was parachutes waiting for them. The first one to grab one was Eve, then Lily and they counted down.
Five, four, three, two, one. Jump!
Bravely, the girls flew down slowly as everything started to finally come to their senses.
All was good. Once they got down, dawn had broke.
