Penelope's Reading Plus Champion tasks

As Reuben progresses through his Reading Plus Champion duties, all his tasks will be added here – so look forward to more amazing activities being published soon!

We are thrilled to share what Penelope achieves as a Reading Plus Champion this academic year!

Within her role, Penelope has the opportunity to complete a series of exciting reading activities throughout the year, including:

  • Writing a blog exploring love for reading and how Reading Plus has made an impact.
  • Expanding their reading further and reviewing books outside of Reading Plus.
  • Creating a vlog detailing all their favourite things about reading.
  • Publishing their very own piece of creative writing on our website.

Opportunities may also arise to collaborate with us on interviews with children’s/YA authors.

Becoming a Reading Plus Champion has made me feel more confident in entering competitions (ones including writing and reading). I feel very proud of myself and feel accomplished in the art of literature and reading after being called a champion of one of my favourite things.

My reading journey blog

What do you enjoy most about reading?

I most like reading for the seed that it plants in your imagination and finishing a book is like winning gold medals🏅. The way you feel you're the main character, either when they're sliding on a rainbow, or fighting a fire dragon from the land below us. Reading itself is my favourite thing, that’s why I will never stop.

Can you tell us about your favourite author/book?

'The Girl Who Walked on Air' and 'Inkheart' are my favourites.

The Girl Who Walked on Air is just a magical, tense, the worry and the excitement all in one is how I would describe the book.

Overall, it is really wonderful and I would recommend it. Emma Caroll is my all-time favourite author. Her ideas inspire me to read and write and put my heart into it. I love the way she weaves her ideas into stories like Frost Hollow Hall, Dark King Wood and many more exciting books that you should read!

Out of all the books you have ever read, who is your favourite character?

Meggie, from Inkheart and Louie, from The Girl Who Walked on Air.

I love Meggie’s determination and courage in the story, she really puts the book together and I love her liking for books too! Louie is as brave as a lion crossing one of the wonders of nature and the way she didn’t back down to 'no'. These characters are truly magic, and that’s why I like them!

What are your favourite things about Reading Plus?

I love the fiction, the nonfiction, almost all of the books on Reading Plus. Getting to the next level is amazing, you feel the accomplishment and you can’t stop smiling! Flash and scan activities are fun too, and consistency and concentration is needed for both. Reading Plus is a place for all who have the ability to do it and don’t, really it's great!

Have you learned any interesting facts from the programme?

I have learned many interesting facts, about the Ring of Fire, Rosalind Franklin, killer plants, science and much more stranger things that I have never heard of before! Human life, geography, DNA 🧬, sports, global warming, animals, deforestation, important people from the past, I could go on!!

Do you feel your reading skills have improved with Reading Plus?

My reading has improved greatly, by speed, how much I can read, my confidence about reading aloud. Reading Plus encouraged me to read more. Not for the awards, not for the levels, but for the books, experience, for the feeling when you’ve finished a book. Not only virtually, in real life too! As I said earlier, finishing books is like earning medals, keep reading, keep winning!

Do you have any advice for other students on their Reading Plus journey?

If I have to give any advice (not that I don’t want to), keep going! Never quit on a book halfway through, it’s like giving up on brushing your teeth, or giving up on eating less chocolate. Always read, always win, that’s what you need to remember!

Book review of 'Kicked Out' by A.M Dassu

Hi! My name is Penelope. The book I am reviewing is 'Kicked Out' about a boy who was accused of spending a lot of money.

The author is A.M Dassu and it is aimed at children aged 9 to 11.

The genre is adventure.

My favourite character is Mark because even though his mum won the lottery, he shared everything with his friends.

The most dramatic part is when Ali gets accused of stealing money, and his whole family and friends kick him out and unfriend him because it is really tense and dramatic, even though I would not want to be Ali.
