Lukoh's Reading Plus Champion tasks

We are thrilled to share what Lukoh has achieved as a Reading Plus Champion this academic year!

Within their role, Lukoh has the opportunity to complete a series of exciting reading activities throughout the year, including:

  • Writing a blog exploring love for reading and how Reading Plus has made an impact.
  • Expanding their reading further and reviewing books outside of Reading Plus.
  • Creating a vlog detailing all their favourite things about reading.
  • Publishing their very own piece of creative writing on our website.

Opportunities may also arise to collaborate with us on interviews with children’s/YA authors.

I think I was nominated because I’ve been super consistent. I don’t just do it when I’m told to in class; I’ve been logging on at home to get my Combos up and unlock those new levels.Reading Plus isn't just "extra schoolwork." It’s actually fun because you get to choose what you read about. My favourite part is seeing my Words Per Minute (WPM) go up - it feels like levelling up in a video game!

My reading journey blog

Becoming a Reading Plus Champion makes me feel proud because it shows how much my reading has improved over time. At first, I found some of the texts difficult, but as I kept practising, I became more confident and quicker at understanding what I read. This achievement motivates me to keep improving and aim even higher. It’s pretty cool to be recognised for something I enjoy doing.

What do you enjoy most about reading?

What I enjoy most about reading is how it allows me to escape into different worlds and experiences. I like how a book can make me feel emotions like excitement, sadness, or curiosity. Reading also helps me learn new ideas and understand different perspectives, which makes it both fun and useful.

Can you tell us about your favourite author/book?

My favourite book is Holes by Louis Sachar because it is interesting and full of mystery. The story has different timelines that connect in clever ways, which kept me thinking while I was reading.

Out of all the books you have ever read, who is your favourite character?

My favourite character is Stanley Yelnats because he changes a lot throughout the story. At the start, he is unlucky and unsure of himself, but by the end he becomes brave and determined, which makes him inspiring.

What are your favourite things about Reading Plus?

One of my favourite things about Reading Plus is how it helps improve both my reading speed and understanding at the same time. I have also learned new vocabulary such as “resilient” and “determined,” which I now try to use in my writing. I have also learned interesting facts from different texts, which has increased my general knowledge.

Do you feel your reading skills have improved with Reading Plus?

Since using Reading Plus, I feel that my reading skills have definitely improved. I can now read faster, understand texts more clearly, and answer questions with more confidence.

Do you have any advice for other students on their Reading Plus journey?

My advice to other students is to stay consistent, take your time to understand the text, and not give up even if it feels challenging at first. Over time, you will see real improvement.

Book review of 'Spirit Warriors' by Ashley Thorpe

Star rating: "I would rate this book 4.5 out of 5 because it is full of action, strong emotions and unique ideas, especially its use of Caribbean folklore."

What was the book about?

Spirit Warriors is an exciting fantasy story about a girl called Evie who lives on a magical island inspired by Jamaica, where dangerous spirits called duppies begin to threaten her home. To stop them, Evie goes on a risky journey with her best friend Arthur - who ends up trapped in a cat’s body - and a trainee warrior named Cai, as they try to defeat the powerful Blackheart Man, who wants to break the barrier between the living and the dead using magical gemstones. As the adventure becomes more intense, Evie must find the courage to use her powers and protect the people she loves, leading to a dramatic ending.

What was your favourite thing about the book, and your favourite character?

My favourite thing about the book is the mythology and magical world, which makes it feel different and interesting, while my favourite character is Cai because he is brave, loyal and grows throughout the story, helping Evie in important ways.

Did you learn any new facts in the book?

I learned new words such as “duppies” (evil spirits), “shaman” (a spiritual healer) and “ancestral” (connected to family from the past), which made the story more meaningful and engaging.
